The Gutiérrez family are third-generation Zapotec weavers whose tradition began with Pedro and Margarita Gutiérrez. In the 1970s, Pedro worked as a full-time weaver known for his detailed, freehand designs inspired by Aztec and Zapotec idols. Margarita prepared and dyed the wool, finished the rugs, and sold homemade chocolate in the village market. Due to colonial-era gender roles, she never learned to weave but played a key role in the family’s craft and livelihood. Their dedication set an example for their seven children, who are now master weavers continuing the Zapotec weaving legacy.
