First published in 1856, The Grammar of Ornament is a landmark design treatise by British architect and designer Owen Jones. Created for the machine age and richly illustrated in chromolithographic color, the book draws on Jones’s studies of decorative arts across Europe, the Middle East, and London, including objects from the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations.
Aiming to elevate Western design and reform Victorian eclecticism, Jones presents a wide-ranging analysis of ornamental styles—from Maori tattoos and Egyptian columns to Byzantine mosaics and Indian embroidery. Both distinctly Victorian and forward-looking, the book remains an influential and essential design reference today.
