In Olive Trees, painted in 1889, Vincent Van Gogh continued to work through color combinations to express the feeling of his new locale of southern France. He played with contrasting colors: red poppies dot green grass, and strokes of orange jump out against dark blue outlines in the gnarled tree trunks. At the same time, he found more freedom through fluid brushwork that followed the contours of the landscape.
